ABOUT SHIRLEY WAISMAN

HELLO :)
Nice to meet you.
I am an illustrator and the Illustrator Coordinator of SCBWI Israel.
I live and work in a small house, surrounded by trees and flowers, with a lovely husband, three sons, an amazing grandfather, and a dog called Sofi.
I grew up in Israel, drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. After the army, I went to the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, where I earned a BA in visual communication.
I worked for a while as a TV game designer and was then awarded a Research Scholarship in Japan for two years, where I discovered the wonderful world of Illustrating children’s books.
Upon my return to Israel, I started working as an illustrator and graphic designer. Between illustrating books, I worked as a designer and illustrator at an e-commerce company on Amazon – while at the same time raising my three very energetic boys :)
Nowadays, after illustrating more than 50 books, I am finishing my Master’s degree in Art and Education while continuing to illustrate books, experiment with different techniques and materials, and work with a rich assembly of elements and textures.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I love what I do – it’s the best career I could ask for, and when I see kids reading my books, smiling, it’s the biggest reward ever.
I usually draw with pencils and color on the computer, but I love to try new techniques, including ink, pastels, or even markers…
I always think about the most interesting way to describe the scene with humor – if I laugh and have fun while illustrating, I believe it passes on to viewers.
I also love to add small details or animals, like a mouse or a cat that the kids will attach to, and find new things every time…
